Understanding Tarot Card Meanings | Tarot Perceptions

Tarot cards are more than just tools for divination; they are gateways to understanding ourselves and the world around us. Self awareness can empower us which enhances our personal journeys. Each tarot deck typically consists of 78 cards, divided into the Major Arcana and Minor Arcana. The Major Arcana contains 22 cards that represent significant life events, spiritual lessons, and transformative experiences. In contrast, the Minor Arcana comprises 56 cards that reflect everyday situations and emotions, categorized into four suits: Cups, Pentacles, Swords, and Wands. Understanding the meanings of these cards is essential for interpreting readings accurately and gaining insight into personal challenges or opportunities.

This page will give a brief overview of each suit. Tap onto the link to view card meanings within each suit.

*Please note that information provided is not exhaustive.  There are many key words or meanings that you will find. I have found that by keeping to the core essence of each card and utilizing a few key words for each allows for easier recall and  your intuition to simultaneously flow. I suggest starting with some meanings and then broadening your knowledge and experience to find how you, personally, connect with each card.

Wands, The " Do- ers" of Tarot

Wands are an active male energy embodying ambitions, what motivates you and creativity.  The wands are the element of fire and tend to bring feelings of excitement, anticipation, confidence, courage, and determination.

The active energy of the wands can  imply things happening quickly ( catching fire)

It’s typical to see wands when work or business are on a persons mind.  They have a creative energy, so this may also apply to hobbies or other creative ventures.  Since the wands suit carries excitement, energy and passion, a majority of them can mean there will be a lot of activity or that the focus is on the career,/creative projects.

Cups - The "Feelers" of Tarot

Cups are the water element. This female  energy is passive, receptive, and  nurturing. This energy is our  emotions.  It embodies the heart through love, feelings, imagination, intuition, and connections

Cups will appear in a reading to show emotions.   A majority of cups can indicate that relationships or feelings in general are playing an important  role in your life right now. These feelings though, can also correlate to your hearts desire: what makes YOU happy, so does not necessarily mean a romantic relationship in some situations.

Swords - the "Thinkers" of Tarot

Swords are the Air element. This is a  powerful, decisive,  and masculine energy.  This is the sphere of the mind. The energy embodies logic, perception,  communication, mental clarity and truth

It is typical to see a lot of swords in a reading if a person is busy thinking, stressed, or trying to solve an issue.  Because of the nature of the swords, they are a lot of times considered the suit of challenges.  Think of what represents them.  A sword is double edged.  On one side is truth, and clarity, problem solving and logic. Depending on how the sword is yielded, it can become confused, cutting, debilitating, used to hurt. This is a powerful element as our own thoughts can influence the other elements within us.  Your thoughts can be instantaneous,  or we can dwell on something for quite a long time.

Pentacles - the "Workers" of Tarot

Major Arcana - the Fool's Journey..
